Blastocyst IVF Transfer Boosts Pregnancy Chances



Let us first understand the development and role of blastocyst!
In natural process, the egg is fertilized by the sperm and they form a single cell called Zygote. Zygote divides further into 2 cells and then into 4 celled Embryo by end of the second day after fertilization.
Further division takes place on 3rd & 4th days after fertilisation, and the embryo is now 16 cells forming a berry-like structure. At this stage, the embryo is called Morula. On Day 5, cells further divide into cluster of around 200 cells called blast cells. Subsequently, a fluid-filled cavity is formed at the centre of embryo. The embryo is now called Blastocyst.
At the Blastocyst stage, the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. This is called implantation.
In Blastocyst transfers, there is a higher chance of the embryo attaching to the uterine lining – implantation. Therefore, a higher chance of pregnancy as implantation ensures that the coming baby will start receiving the nourishment from the mother’s blood supply. The fluid-filled cavity in blastocyst will become amniotic sac which surrounds and protects the coming baby.
This means in IVF procedure, when day 2 embryo transfer is done- one has to wait for embryo to develop into blastocyst till day 5th or 6th. As we consider day 5 blastocyst transfer- it is already developed to invade and implant itself into womb. Studies have shown implantation rates might be as high as 50% with blastocysts and as low as 30% with early-stage embryos. Depending on factors like younger age women under 40, with good production of ovaries and fewer number of previous failed IVF cycles, the chances of blastocyst transfer resulting in successful pregnancy may be higher.
In IVF procedure, day 2 embryo transfer is a common practice in all fertility and IVF clinics. Blastocyst culturing is available in few clinics and they probably charge you high prices for it. Some clinics do it more skilfully than others. Quality control and correct culturing techniques are essential for developing embryo into blastocyst.
