EGG FREEZING / OOCYTE VITRIFICATION – NO LONGER EXPERIMENTAL

Cryopreservation of eggs has remained a challenge until recently. Egg is a large cell with a high water content. The older slow freezing methods could not completely prevent the ice crystal formation which damages the cell during freezing and thawing. This has been virtually eliminated by a relatively new technique called Vitrification or ultra rapid cooling. Studies have documented comparable results with ICSI/IVF on vitrified/warmed oocytes and fresh oocytes in younger women both in terms of fertilization and clinical pregnancy. Available data on the incidence of congenital abnormalities in the children born using vitrified/warmed eggs, though limited are also reassuring with no significant increase in risk when compared with conventional IVF/ICSI and the general population. American Society for Reproductive Medicine in January 2013 lifted the label ‘experimental” from oocyte vitrification. Successful oocyte vitrification program simplifies oocyte donation programs. There...

Acupuncture in boosting IVF results

Acupuncture, is an ancient Chinese system of alternate medicine in which fine needles are inserted in the skin at specific points along what are considered to be lines of energy, depending on the condition requiring treatment. Despite the advances of modern medicine in reproductive medicine, the success rates of ARTs are not very high. According to most studies, IVF is only about 30 percent effective with each procedure, as a result, majority of couples need more than one IVF and ICSI treatments . The stress brought about by failures very often leaves couples looking for options that could promote their chances of conceiving. According to a recent study from Homerton, Britain, Acupuncture can dramatically improve success rates. The British studies claim almost double the success with acupuncture. Blastocyst IVF Transfer Boosts Pregnancy Chances

Let us first understand the development and role of blastocyst ! In natural process, the egg is fertilized by the sperm and they form a single cell called  Zygote . Zygote divides further into 2 cells and then into 4 celled  Embryo  by end of the second day after fertilization. Further division takes place on 3 rd  & 4 th  days after fertilisation, and the embryo is now 16 cells forming a berry-like structure. At this stage, the embryo is called  Morula . On Day 5, cells further divide into cluster of around 200 cells called blast cells. Subsequently, a fluid-filled cavity is formed at the centre of embryo. The embryo is now called  Blastocyst. At the Blastocyst stage, the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. This is called implantation. In Blastocyst transfers, there is a higher chance of the embryo attaching to the uterine lining – implantation. Therefore, a higher chance of pregnancy as implantation ensures that the coming baby w...
